The Rev. Alfred Green-Price who played once for the South Wales Cricket Club during 1882 holds a very special place in cricket history as thirty-seven years after his sole appearance for the Club he made his first-class debut in HK Foster’s XI which played Worcestershire at New Road in 1919 and at 59 years and 185 days old became the oldest-ever debutant in the first-class game.
Born at Norton Manor in Knighton, he was the son of Sir Richard Green-Price and educated at Repton and Trinity College Cambridge. He was in the school’s XI and appeared in College cricket at Cambridge, where he also won a Football Blue in 1882. It was during this time that he made his appearance for the South Wales Cricket Club as he played at The Oval against Surrey Club and Ground, making 15 and 8.
His appearance also came whilst he was training to become a Clerk in Holy Orders, and subsequently became curate of Ripon in 1886 before moving from Yorkshire to Surrey to serve as Curate of Ashstead in 1890. In 1894 he was on his travels back north again as Alfred was appointed Curate of Oulton.
During this time, the right-handed batter continued his cricketing activities, playing for Herefordshire in 1886 as well as Radnorshire between 1885 and 1888, whilst in 1897 he also played for the Yorkshire Gentlemen. As far as club cricket was concerned, Alfred was associated with Knighton CC, Ludlow CC, Stoke Edith CC and Ripon CC.
In 1898 he was on the move again as he was appointed Vicar of East Tuddenham before in 1902 becoming Rector of Tarrington in Herefordshire. In 1925 he was appointed as Vicar of Norton and remained in Radnorshire for the rest of his life. He had married Mary Edwards n 1893 at St. Asaph, with the couple having three daughters. Two of Alfred’s brothers also played cricket to a decent standard – Herbert who represented Herefordshire in 1891 and Richard who had played for Radnorshire during 1869 prior to become the Second Baronet Green-Price on 11 August 1887.
