The County Championship match between Glamorgan and Leicestershire saw Mason Crane become the first-ever batter to be dismissed stumped one run short of a century. He had arrived at the crease on the opening day with Glamorgan on 265-7 and, with the support of Timm van der Gugten, saw Glamorgan to 334-7 at the close. Mason began the second day unbeaten on 48 and duly completed a 91 ball fifty, as together with the Dutch international, they further blunted the visiting attack. Having added 133 runs with Mason, van der Gugten was stumped playing forward to Ben Green. The resolute Andy Gorvin then helped Mason take Glamorgan to 410-8 at lunch with Mason Crane unbeaten on 84.
In the fourth over of the afternoon session, Andy Gorvin chipped Josh Davey to mid-on where Ian Holland completed the catch. Ryan Hadley came in to join Crane, who was now on 88 and soon swept Ajaz Patel, the Kiwi international, for four. Despite his partner’s limited batting pedigree, Mason was able to add further singles, as well as cleverly upper cutting Josh Hull to the vacant ropes at third man for four. Another series of dot balls then followed before Mason attempted to slog-sweep Patel but over-balanced and was stumped for 99.
As the list below shows, he was the first Glamorgan batter to be stumped for 99 in a first-class match, as well as being the first since Nick Selman against Sussex at Hove in 2019 to depart one short of a richly-deserved hundred.
