John Wood was the second son of Rev. Charles Wood, the vicar of Penmark near Barry, and the younger brother of Charles Page Wood who organized the match in 1867 at the Spa Ground in Gloucester where a so-called Glamorganshire eleven, including his father and brother, turned out against the Gloucester club. Batting at number ten, he made 0* in his only innings.

By the time of this match, John had already commenced a career in the Royal Navy and he duly served as paymaster on HM Euphrates during the Egyptian War in 1882, during which he won various decorations. He became fleet paymaster in 1895 and paymaster-in-chief in 1909. After retiring he became a Magistrate in Cornwall and lived at Torpoint.
