Henry Evans was a well-known barrister on the South Wales and Chester Circuit from 1870 until 1910. In his youth he had been a highly talented all-rounder for Eton College and briefly Cambridge University, as well as playing for Pembrokeshire and Glamorganshire. His appearance for the latter came on 18 and 19 July at the Arms Park against Breconshire.

By this time, Henry had been called to the Bar and had followed his father, John Maylett QC into the legal world. However, in his youth Henry was one of the most promising young cricketers in West Wales, as he showed on 4 September 1863 when the teenager opening the batting and bowling for Pembrokeshire against Carmarthenshire at Tenby. He made 5 and 24* besides claiming thirteen wickets in the contest. The following year he was in the Eton XI before going to Cambridge where he featured in the Light Blues team.

Henry returned to Pembrokeshire and was a stalwart member of Haverfordwest CC. In later life he also acted as a JP for the county.
