Henry Calcutt, a young engineer, played for Cardiff CC during the early 1880s and went on the South Wales Cricket Club ‘s tour to the London area in 1880 and 1881.

Born in Marylebone in 1860, his father was a master butcher and after leaving Beardmore House School in Chiswick, Henry was given an opportunity to train as an engineer in Cardiff. He also continued his education at Cardiff Science and Art School, besides joining Cardiff CC and showing prowess as a batter, possibly having been coached as a youngster at Lord’s.

In 1880 Henry also played for Cardiff CC against the United South of England as well as winning selection for the South Wales Cricket Club against the Next XVII at the Arms Park. He duly won selection for the Club in their match against Clifton CC before going on their annual and playing against the Gentlemen of Sussex and the MCC. Henry top-scored with 40 in the second innings of the match at Hove and went on their 1881 tour where he played at Lord’s and The Oval.

He continued playing for the next few seasons for Cardiff CC, before returning to the London area and getting married in Stepney in 1894.
