Born in Cardiff and educated at Clifton College, George Bird played for Glamorganshire between 1861 and 1864. His father hailed from Guernsey before setting up a thriving woollen business in Cardiff and becoming a member of the town council.
In 1858 he married a Danish lady and subsequently moved to Swansea where he set up a successful shipbrokerage. Using his wife’s European contacts, George also acted as Vice-consul for Sweden, Norway and Holland. In 1870 the Bird family moved to the Newcastle area with the 1871 Census recording them as living in Elswick. A few years later they were on the move again as the 1881 Census records the Bird’s living in South Hornsey with George having secured a business opportunity in the London Docks.
