Edward Ord, a former pupil of Cowbridge Grammar School, appeared in seven matches for Glamorganshire between 1871 and 1875. His debut came during June 1871 when he played at Cardiff Arms Park against Monmouthshire.
His father was Ralph Ord, a well-to-do stockbroker who subsequently lived at Llanblethian near Cowbridge. After completing his legal studies, Edward set up a practice in the High Street of the market town in the Vale of Glamorgan. Nevertheless, he still found time to play plenty of cricket and, as a member of the South Wales Cricket Club, he went on their London tour in 1874, 1875, 1876 and 1877, besides travelling with his friends to Hove in 1880 for the Club’s match against the Gentlemen of Sussex.
Edward also played for Breconshire against Herefordshire in 1874 and 1875, whilst in the latter season he also played for the Gentlemen of East Glamorgan against their counterparts from the West at Merthyr Mawr House.
He moved to the London area during the early 1880s and looked to change careers. One of the reasons may have been the fact that he was accused of fraud by a former client in Cowbridge. He duly appeared in court at the Old Bailey during September 1887 and was found not guilty. But the matter may have contributed to his premature death in July 1890 at the age of 48.
