William Hodgson was the son of George Horsfall, a prosperous merchant who lived at Toxteth Park in Liverpool.

Educated at Harrow and Trinity Hall in Cambridge, William was friendly with various young sporting gentlemen form Wales and was drafted into the Glamorganshire side on 8 and 9 August 1872 when they played Radnorshire at Llandrindod Wells. Arriving without several of the chosen party, William was one of the substitute players – he made 0 and 3 – as Radnorshire won by one wicket.

He also played for Hebden Bridge CC before qualifying as a barrister and by living in Shropshire, was on the Wales and the Marches Circuit. His grandfather had been mayor of Liverpool in 1832/33.
