William Butler was a highly talented all-rounder who played for Swansea CC as well as for Glamorganshire between 1870 and 1872.

His county debut came against the West Gloucestershire club at Cardiff Arms Park on 30 June and 1 July 1870. The following year, he struck an unbeaten 42 against Herefordshire at Hereford prior to claiming four wickets as well as making a combative 33 against Capt. Pearson’s XI at Cardiff Arms Park in 1872.
