Thomas Hambly appeared in two county matches during 1871 at Usk – one for Glamorganshire and one for Monmouthshire – whilst working in the town as Manager of the London and Provincial Bank.

The Bristol-born gentleman had previously lived in Cardiff where he had played cricket for the town’s club, before moving to Usk. On 17 and 18 July 1871 he was drafted into the Glamorganshire team which met Monmouthshire and, batting at number eleven, made 4 and 1. The following week, he played at the same venue for Monmouthshire against the Cotswold Magpies where, batting again at number eleven, he scored 1 and 0.

Thomas got married in Abergavenny during 1879 before moving with Mary to Cowbridge where he managed the town’s branch of the London and Provincial Bank. It appears to have only been a brief stay in the Vae of Glamorgan as his daughter was born in Walthamstow in 1883 before the family moved back to the Bristol area with the family listed in the Censuses of 1891 and 1901 as living at Westbury-on-Trym and Thornbury. Thomas also had a change of career as in the 1891 Census he was listed as a clerk in an accountancy, and then in 1891 as a tobacco salesman.
