Colonel Thomas Conway Lloyd enjoyed a distinguished military career besides playing county cricket for Breconshire, Herefordshire and Glamorganshire, in addition to being an active playing member of the South Wales Cricket Club.

He was the eldest son of Captain John Lloyd of Dinas, near Brecon and appeared three times for Glamorganshire during 1871, having previously played for Herefordshire in 1850 and Breconshire in 1866. His Glamorganshire debut came on 11 and 12 June 1871 against Monmouthshire at Cardiff Arms Park where he scored 12 and 0. A fortnight later, he played again at the Arms Park, scoring 10 against Herefordshire before on 17 and 18 July turning out at Usk in the contest against Monmouthshire where he scored 0 and 2.

Educated at Eton and Christ College, Oxford, he had joined the Army in 1851 and initially served as aide de camp and military secretary to the Governor of St. Helena, besides playing cricket for the island’s garrison cricket club. He subsequently served with the 4th Kings Own Regiment in the Crimea, before returning to Brecon where he became Colonel and commanding officer of the 1st Volunteer Battalion of the South Wales Borderers. He also acted as High Sheriff of Breconshire in 1878 as well as Mayor of Brecon in 1879/80.
