William Gildea was another cricketing cleric, making a solitary appearance for the South Wales Cricket Club against the Knickerbockers at Aldershot. Batting at number eleven, he scored an unbeaten four in his sole innings as the Welsh team won by five wickets.

He was the second son of Rev. George Gildea, the former Provost of Tuam Cathedral in the Republic of Ireland, and educated at Marlborough before going up to Exeter College, Oxford. William was subsequently ordained in 1856 and appointed as Vicar of Compton Vallance. In 1862 he became vicar of Holy Trinity Church, West Lulworth before being appointed vicar of Nentherbury.

In 1897 Rev. Canon Gildea and his wife travelled to Valparaiso in Chile where he served as Anglican Chaplain. They returned to the UK in 1901 following William being appointed as Rector of St. Laurence Church at Upwey in Dorset.
