The Rev. Robert Cooper played once for the South Wales Cricket Club, appearing in July 1865 against Surrey Club and Ground at The Oval. The 35-year old vicar opened the batting with a youthful WG Grace and scored 18 and 11 in what proved to be his sole appearance for the Club.
He was a friend of JTD Llewelyn’s having studied at Christ Church, Oxford before following his father, Rev. Robert Jermyn Cooper(senior) into the ministry and serving as Vicar of Fyllingdales in Yorkshire from 1859 until his death in 1873.
Rev. Cooper (senior) was Vicar of Stinchcombe in Gloucestershire, and later West Chittington in Sussex. He was also the author of two theological treatises – “Is the Bible the Truth? A Brief Inquiry” and “The Sabbath Question – Shall the Sabbath be retained or not?” Robert (junior) followed his father’s example and also put pen to paper and in 1857 wrote “An Address on the War between France and Prussia, and the paramount necessity for England to arm herself against foreign aggression.”
