Rev. Richard Stewart was another cricketing cleric who was friendly with several of the key personnel involved with the South Wales Cricket Club and Glamorganshire during the 1870s.

Born on Merseyside and educated at Liverpool Royal Institution as well as Gonville and Caius College in Cambridge, Richard appears to have been a very enthusiastic disciple of Muscular Christianity.

His family had links with the Oswestry and Lampeter area, whilst through friends from his days at Cambridge, he became a member of the South Wales Cricket Club and went on their London tour during 1877 scoring 7 and 6 in the match against the MCC at Lord’s. Two years earlier, he had also played for Glamorganshire against Breconshire at Brecon, but he met with less success with the bat and scored 0 and 1.

Richard was Curate of Beeston in Nottinghamshire from 1852 until 1854 before serving as Vicar of Hale in Liverpool from 1855 until 1906.
