Mike Read, a tall fast bowler, had three years on Glamorgan’s staff during the 2010s before a knee injury ended his professional career.
Mike played in youth team cricket in his native Leicestershire before coming to Glamorgan’s attention whilst a student at Cardiff University. The fast bowler delivered some impressive spells against county professionals whilst playing for the Cardiff MCCU team and, after graduating, he joined the Welsh county’s full-time staff, before making his first-class debut in 2012 against Kent at Canterbury.
During 2013, Mike produced several hostile spells in Championship matches, with a haul of 38 wickets at 29 runs apiece – including a career-best 6/34 against Cardiff MCCU at the SWALEC Stadium. He was likened to former England paceman Steve Harmison for his accuracy, pace and unnerving bounce with his efforts drawing the attention of the England talent scouts who included him in their winter programme for emerging talent during 2013/14
However, Mike subsequently sustained a knee injury which saw him miss the entire 2014 season, and he subsequently left the Glamorgan staff.
