Michael Donovan had a decent record as a young batsman with Neath, and this led to his inclusion for the South Wales CC in their match against Worcestershire in 1885.
He subsequently studied at University College Cardiff where he was a mainstay of the student team. With Glamorgan looking to blood fresh talent, rather than relying on the old stagers, Michael’s record for the university and Neath led to his inclusion in the county’s side for four matches during 1891.
In 1894 he also made a very impressive 33 against the South Africans at Cardiff Arms Park, and a bright future was predicted for the young batter. However, he only scored four runs in three subsequent matches against county opposition.
