Matthew Arnold, a master tailor and draper from Neath, played for the Cadoxton Club during the 1860s and 1870s at a time when the Neath-based club were amongst the leading sides in South Wales. He made one appearance for the Glamorganshire county side – against Breconshire in a two-day game at Brecon -on 15 and 16 June 1870.
He was probably a late addition to the eleven, as he was one of two people to be absent in Glamorganshire’s first innings as they were bundled out for just 30. Batting for a second time Matthew made an unbeaten 4 as Breconshire were defeated by 65 runs.
