Martin Vesey Fitzgerald played three times for the South Wales Cricket Club during 1880 whilst training as a solicitor in Cardiff. The all-rounder had enjoyed some success at Rugby School as well as Cardiff CC, and after making 25 for the Club in their trial against the Next XVIII at Cardiff Arms Park, he was chosen in the Club’s line-up for their matches, again at the Arms Park against Clifton CC and the MCC. He scored 8 and took three wickets in the former before scoring 3 and 5 in the latter match besides claiming four wickets.
It proved to be his only appearances for the Club as soon afterwards he moved to Australia where he practised in Melbourne, before moving to Canada where he worked in Quebec and Manitoba. Having retired from the legal profession, Martin returned to the UK shortly before the Great War and lived at Clifton Hall in Rugby, before moving to live in Sockton in Wiltshire.
He was the grandson of 1st Baron Fitzgerald, a politician and former President of the British East India Company who during his political career served briefly as MP for Newport.
