Jonathan Hughes made his first-class debut for Glamorgan in 2001, having impressed as a schoolboy whilst playing for Hopkinstown CC. Indeed, he had first played for Glamorgan’s 2nd XI during 1997 whilst a sixteen year-old schoolboy in Pontypridd and the following year he spent the summer on the MCC groundstaff at Lord’s. With Glamorgan having a settled 1st XI batting line-up his opportunities were restricted at first but the retirements of Steve James and Matthew Maynard duly gave him further chances in all formats of the game.

Jonny had begun in the county’s middle-order, but during 2003 he moved up to open the batting and in 2004 he recorded his maiden Championship century against Leicestershire at Cardiff. In 2005 Jonny scored 134* and 100* in the match against Middlesex at Southgate, but he failed to pass fifty in his other 23 Championship innings.

With Glamorgan opting to sign overseas opening batsmen in Jimmy Maher and Mark Cosgrove, Jonny was released from the Glamorgan staff at the end of 2005.
