Joseph Eustance, whose family were well-known publicans and brewers in Neath, played once for Glamorganshire – against Breconshire at Brecon on 15 and 16 June 1870. Joseph was a very adroit wicket-keeper, claiming three stumpings and one catch in the match which the visitors won by 65 runs.
After training with his father Thomas, who was a maltster and publican, Joseph became the landlord of The Cricketers Arms in Neath, besides being a very active member of Cadoxton CC. His success and popularity amongst sporting circles led him and his family to move to Swansea to run another public house, but during 1888 he was accused of three counts of fraud. He was acquitted but did not move back into the brewing trade, and instead moved to Cardiff with his wife where he secured a clerical post.
His elder brother Hopkin was also a decent cricketer, playing for the South Wales XXII against the All-England Eleven at Court Herbert in 1855 and again the following year at The Gnoll. He also trained at the Royal Military College at Woolwich and after a brief military career became an accountant.
