Jake Archer worked at Abercarn tinplate works and this reserved occupation allowed him to appear for the Welsh county against the Royal Australian Air Force during May 1945 at the Arms Park having the previous year played against Glamorgan for the Anti-Aircraft Command and the West of England XI in a couple of other wartime friendlies.
During the 1930s Jake had played Minor County cricket for both Monmouthshire and Glamorgan but his well-paid job in the Abercarn works dissuaded him from becoming a professional with the Welsh county.
