Hubert Carlyon was the son of the Rev. Clement Winstanley Carylon, the Rector of St. Just-in-Roseland in Cornwall. Despite having no residential link with South Wales, he made one appearance for a Glamorganshire XI against Gloucester CC at the town’s Spa Ground on 29 and 30 July, 1867.
The county eleven had been chosen by Rev. Charles Page Wood, a newly ordained vicar from Cowbridge who had been educated at Jesus College, Oxford, and included various members of the cricket clubs from Cardiff and Cadoxton, plus some talented theology students including Hubert. Batting at number six, the Cambridge scholar made 24 and 44*.
Despite playing in college cricket at Cambridge, he never again played in quasi-county cricket and instead enjoyed a hugely successful career as a clerk in holy orders in the UK, New Zealand and South Africa.
He was Curate of St. Phillack from 1872 until 1875 before emigrating to New Zealand where he served as Vicar of Kaiapoi until 1878. The following year he was appointed Vicar of Ladysmith in Natal before being Precentor of St. Saviour’s in Pietermaritzburg during 1882 and 1883. Hubert was then Vicar of St. Cyprions in Durban until 1888 before returning to the UK and succeeding his late father as Rector of St. Just-in-Roseland.
In 1893 he was on the move again as he served as Vicar of Harlesden but his curacy came to a sudden end during June 1900 when he died in Gloucestershire aged just 52.
