George Alexander was a member of the well-known family of estate agents and auctioneers, based in Cardiff in the late Victorian and early Edwardian era.

His father, John, was a well-to-do farmer who provided food and provisions for the village of Penmark as well as Cowbridge in the Vale of Glamorgan. After attending the local Grammar School, George went on the South Wales Cricket Club’s tour of the Home Counties in July 1863 with the youngster playing against Surrey Club and Ground at The Oval, Wimbledon CC, the MCC at Lord’s, the Gentlemen of Kent at Cranbrook and I Zingari in a second match at Lord’s. Despite his decent record for Cowbridge Grammar School, George met with little success scoring just 18 runs in his seven innings, besides bagging a pair at Cranbrook.

He worked as an auctioneer initially in south-west Wales and played for Cardiganshire in 1869 before moving to Cardiff to join his uncle’s thriving business. However, he never played again for the South Wales club.
