Gary Butcher took a wicket with his first ball on his debut for Glamorgan in the Sunday League against Somerset at Swansea in 1994. The youngest son of Alan Butcher subsequently proved himself to be a useful all-rounder, especially in one-day games.

His finest performance with the ball came against Gloucestershire at Bristol in 1996 when he took 7/77 whilst the following summer he struck a century from just 64 balls against Oxford University. During 1997 Gary played in nine of the Welsh county’s Championship games but with Glamorgan having an experienced and settled middle-order, he never commanded a regular place in their Championship side line-up. Somewhat ironically, Gary left to join Surrey in 1999 and subsequently became a member of their Championship winning team.

Gary retired from professional cricket in 2002 and subsequently played Minor County cricket for Hertfordshire.
