Gareth Edwards made one appearance for Glamorgan during 1997, against Oxford University but he failed to take a wicket with his off-spin and did not bat on what proved to be his sole appearance for the Welsh county.
He had impressed for age-group teams and had first played for Glamorgan`s 2nd XI at the age of 17 whilst still at school in Ruthin. The North Walian subsequently accepted a place on the county`s staff whilst reading Geography at University College, London.
After some useful performances in second team games, Gareth was chosen in the England Under 19 party which toured Zimbabwe in 1995/96. However, with Robert Croft the first choice off-spinner, Gareth had few opportunities to press his claims for a first team place and he left the county’s staff at the end of 1997.
Gareth duly joined the BBC, and he has subsequently been the executive producer of the popular “A Question of Sport” TV programme as well as “Mastermind”.
