Edward Hartnell was a captain in the Royal Sussex Regiment when he played for the South Wales Cricket Club in 1863 and 1864.
He had also played against them for Surrey Club and Ground in 1862, scoring 0 and 12. His debut for the Welsh club came a few days after playing against them for the MCC at Lord’s during which he scored 3 and 0. However, it was his lively seam bowling that was in demand for the next game against the Gentlemen of Kent at Cranbrook where he claimed six wickets, besides scoring 0 and 13.
Edward turned out again for the Club in 1864, scoring 23 against the Gentlemen of Sussex at Hove before innings of 0 and 1 in the game against the Gentlemen of Kent at Gravesend. It proved to be his last match of note as he subsequently served as Colonel of the Third Battalion of the 2nd Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment.
Educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, Edward made 22 first-class appearances for both the University as well as his native Surrey. Despite his military commitments, Capt. Hartnell played regularly for the MCC between 1853 and 1862, as well as the Gentlemen of England at the Canterbury Festival between 1853 and 1855, plus the Gentlemen of the South of England between 1861 and 1862.
His club cricket was for Reigate CC and Godalming CC.
