Edward Bennett was a long-serving master at Cheltenham College who, whilst working in South Wales, had played for the Glamorganshire team during 1871 and 1872, in addition to appearing for the Gentlemen of South Wales against the Players at the Bryn-y-Mor Field in Swansea on 1 and 2 August 1870.
His first appearance for Glamorganshire came on 11 and 12 June 1871 when he played against Monmouthshire at Cardiff Arms Park. The following year he played in the match at Neath against Breconshire on 2 and 3 July.
A Devonian by birth, he attended Plymouth College and Emmanuel College, Cambridge prior to embarking on a teaching career which saw him work in Plymouth, Swansea, Cardiff and Cheltenham. Despite his studies, he had also played for Devon from 1867 until 1873.
