Chris Smith was coached in South Africa by Alan Jones, who invited him to play in the South Wales Leagues, and hopefully join Glamorgan. The right handed batsman followed Jones` advice and played in club cricket in South Wales in 1979, but he was considered an overseas player and only played in Glamorgan`s friendly against the Sri Lankans at Swansea.
In 1980 he joined Hampshire and ironically was then classed as English, making his Test debut in 1983. The steady opening batsman – who is the brother of Robin Smith – duly played in eight Tests for England and enjoyed a highly successful career with Hampshire, until retiring the end of the 1991 to become the Marketing Manager of the Western Australian Cricket Association.
