Charles Spencer was the son of a well-known Cardiff solicitor and, as a wicket-keeper, he played one match for Glamorgan against HDG Leveson-Gowers XI in 1925 as the county’s selectors gave opportunities to local talent. However, he failed to score on what proved to be his sole appearance for the Welsh county.
At the time of his selection for Glamorgan, Charles was a student at Magdelene College, Oxford having previously impressed in the Clifton College XI and playing for the Glamorgan Club and Ground side.
Charles played for several years for Penarth CC before becoming a teacher at Stowe School. He subsequently accepted a post during the late 1930s at a school in Eastbourne. His grandfather Richard had been a leading member of the South Wales CC during the late nineteenth century.
