Charles Johnson, a joiner and case maker at the Hafod Copper Works, had a decent playing record with Swansea CC. In 1913 he was chosen to play for the Gentlemen of Glamorgan in their two friendlies against the Gentlemen of Carmarthenshire. He opened the batting with Gwyn Thomas in the first match at Llanelli and made 13 before scoring 8 at number four in the second innings, He met with less success in the second contest at Swansea, where he made an unbeaten 8 batting at number eight.
Together with his three brothers Stanley, Sidney and Bertie, Charles joined the Welch Regiment soon after the outbreak of War in 1914.
Tragically, he was killed at Mametz Wood during the Battle of the Somme on 12 July 1916.
