Charles Hamilton was a late substitute in the South Wales Cricket Club’s eleven for two of their games on their 1865 tour of the Home Counties when EM Grace withdrew.
The Inland Revenue Officer was a member of the MCC as well as the Surrey Club, and in 1864 had played for the latter against the Welsh team at The Oval, scoring 0* and 40. Having impressed their officials the previous year, he was drafted into their eleven for the match in July 1865 at Gravesend against the Gentlemen of Kent. Charles scored 12 and 13, and remained in their line-up for the following match at The Oval against Surrey Club and Ground.
