Charles Hall was a member of the MCC groundstaff at Lord’s who assisted the South Wales Cricket Club during their visit to the London area in 1864. The 21 year-old had played the previous summer for the MCC and Ground against the Welsh club and, presumably having impressed JTD Llewelyn and other senior members of the Welsh party, the right-handed batter and round-arm bowler, was invited to join them for their matches against Surrey Club and Ground, Knickerbockers, Southgate and I Zingari. He did little of note with bat or ball and it may have been his fielding prowess that led to his selection.
The summer of 1864 also saw Charles play for the Middlesex Colts and the following summer, he again played for their Club and Ground side against the South Wales Cricket Club on their 1865 tour of the Home Counties. In 1866 Charles was a member of the United England Eleven which toured the Channel Islands and played at St. Peter Port in Guernsey, whilst in 1867 he appeared for the United team again against Hornsey CC.
However, 1867 was the summer when Charles made his first-class debut, as he was drafted into the Middlesex side for their match against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. Batting at number eleven, Charles made 7 and 5 in his only first-class match.
Charles continued to appear for the MCC as well as the United South of England, playing against Gloucester CC in 1868. His final match of not came in 1878 when he played for the MCC against Richmond CC at Old Deer Park.
