Charles Coombs was a prominent member of Llanelly CC during the 1850s and 1860s. The Berkshire-born auctioneer and accountant lived at Parc Howard, an Italianate-style mansion which overlooked the town. He was also a Director of the town’s pottery, so given his standing in local society – rather than any outstanding cricketing ability – he was chosen in the XXII of Llanelly and District which met the United England XI at Llanelly House in 1856.

Five years later he appeared for Glamorganshire, probably as a late replacement, in the match against Carmarthenshire at Llanelly on 5 and 6 August. Batting at number eleven, Charles made 1 and 4 as the home side won a low-scoring contest by 3 runs.
