Charles Alexander was the son of William Alexander, a well-to-do timber merchant and town councillor, who lived at Park Place in Cardiff. Charles played cricket and association football for Cardiff, besides making one appearance for Glamorganshire against Breconshire at Cardiff Arms Park on 14 and 15 July, 1874. He may well have been a late substitute for the match, as he batted at number 11 in both innings, scoring 3 and 6*, but did not bowl at any time in the match.

After getting married in Bristol during 1879, Charles moved away from Cardiff and lived with his wife Jane and their two sons and daughter in Honor Oak Park, Lewisham. He was a machinery and contracting agent, probably working in the London Docklands.
