Bert Hodges

Bert Hodges, a leading batsman with Newport CC, made one appearance for Glamorgan during 1936, appropriately enough on his home turf at Rodney Parade.

Bert had initially played for the Monmouthshire Colts before making 100 for the Minor County against Oxfordshire at Ebbw Vale in 1926, plus innings of 66 and 65 against Surrey 2nd XI at The Oval during 1929 and 1930. In the latter summer, he also made his first-class debut as he played for Wales against the MCC at Lord’s.

His continued success for Newport saw Bert play for Glamorgan 2nd XI during 1935 against Middlesex 2nd XI at Osterley. With Maurice Turnbull playing for the South against the North at Lord’s in mid-June 1936, Bert was drafted into the Glamorgan for the match with Gloucestershire at Newport.
