Asitha Fernando played for Glamorgan in three spells throughout the 2025 season and when making his debut against Leicestershire at Sophia Gardens became the first Sri Lankan international to play in first-class cricket for the Welsh county after reaching an agreement to appear in the first batch of Rothesay County Championship games of the season, before returning later in July and September, with his fast-medium bowling and reverse swing being a factor behind Glamorgan securing promotion into Division One of the County Championship competition for 2026.

The stocky pace bowler had experience of English conditions during his country’s visit in 2024 when he took 17 wickets at just 24.64 runs apiece during the three-Test series. He also had a short stint in 2023 with Nottinghamshire.

At the time of his acquisition by Glamorgan, Asitha had played in 21 Test Matches, plus 15 One-Day Internationals as well as 7 T20 Internationals. The 27 year-old made his international debut in Sri Lanka’s One-Day International against Zimbabwe in July 2017 prior to making his Test debut against South Africa in January 2021.

He took his maiden ten-wicket haul in Test cricket during the second match of the 2022 series against Bangladesh, returning with figures of 6/51 in the second innings having claimed four wickets during the first innings. His next five-wicket haul came last August at Lord’s when he claimed 5/102 in the second Test against England and thereby became only the second Sri Lankan after Rumesh Ratnayake to have their name on the Honours Board at the St. John’s Wood ground.
