Arthur Lawrence, who became the senior mining engineer to the Great Western Railway, played once for Glamorganshire on 23 and 24 June against Breconshire. He bagged a pair in the match at Brecon, but a month later played for Monmouthshire against Glamorganshire at Usk. Opening the batting, Arthur made 18 and 0, before appearing a few weeks later at the same ground against the Royal Welch Fusiliers.
He was the son of George Lawrence, a well-to-do merchant and JP, who lived at Christchurch in Newport as well as at Moreton Court in Herefordshire. After completing his training as a mining engineer, Arthur worked in Cardiff for over fifty years, initially in partnership with Edward Hann, who later became Chair of the Powell Duffryn company. He also acted as a Director of the Tredegar Iron and Coal Company, and given his high standing with the Great Western Railway, he acted as an advisor to various Parliamentary committees when matters relating to various Railway Bills.
Arthur and his wife lived initially in The Walk in Tredegarville, a prosperous inner suburb of Cardiff, before moving to life at Lavernock House. In his youth, he had also been a keen huntsman and was a first-rate shot.
