Alviro Petersen was Glamorgan’s captain in 2011 – a summer which saw the South African opening batsman amass over 2,000 runs in all cricket for the Welsh county, besides reaching the 1,000 run landmark in Championship cricket in the final game of the summer, away to Kent at Canterbury.

During the summer Alviro also posted a career-best double hundred against Surrey in the County Championship match at The Oval, besides making a swashbuckling 144 against the Lancashire Lightning in the Clydesdale Bank40 game at Colwyn Bay. He agreed terms to return to the Welsh county in 2012 but during the winter months he returned to the South African Test team, scoring a century in the Third Test against the Sri Lankans and sharing in a double-century stand with Jacques Kallis.

Following his successful recall to the South African Test team, Alviro informed the Club that he had had a change of heart about retiring from international cricket and asked the Club to release him from his commitment. Alviro subsequently spent the first half of the 2012 season playing for Essex before appearing in the Protea’s Test series against England. He then spent two years as an overseas player with Somerset, before retiring from international cricket and playing for Lancashire during 2015 and 2016.

In December 2016 Alviro was banned from cricket for two years by Cricket South Africa after match-fixing allegations during the domestic T20 competition in 2015/16. In all, Alviro appeared in 36 Tests for South Africa as well as 21 One-Day Internationals and a pair of International T20s.
