Alexander Thackeray, a prominent stockbroker in nineteenth century Cardiff, played six times for Glamorganshire between 1871 and 1874. Born in the London area, he moved to South Wales during his twenties and established the stockbroking business of Thackeray and Co. By the time of his death in a health spa in Eastbourne in 1908, he was the resident of Glan Ely House to the west of Cardiff, besides being a Director of the Cardiff Gas Light and Coke Company.
He played club cricket for Cardiff and Llandaff, and made his debut for Glamorganshire during June 1871 when he was included in the side which met Monmouthshire at the Arms Park. A few weeks later, the batter scored 80 against Herefordshire at the Cardiff ground – it proved to be his highest-ever score with his next highest innings being 15 against Captain Pearson’s XI at the Arms Park in June 1872. Two years later, he made his final appearance for Glamorganshire, against Breconshire, also at the Arms Park.
During June 1880 he also appeared for Cardiff CC against the United South of England at the Arms Park, whilst in August 1883, Alexander also appeared at the Cardiff ground for East Wales against West Wales. His son Guy, who was educated at Uppingham, succeeded Alexander in the family business, besides playing for Glamorgan between 1901 and 1906.
