Ajaz Patel, the 33 year-old left-arm spinner from New Zealand, played for Glamorgan during September 2022 as the Welsh county pressed for promotion.
Born in Mumbai, India during October 1988, Ajaz was brought up in New Zealand and he made his first-class debut for Central Districts during 2012/13. During November 2018 Ajaz made his Test Match debut against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.
When he signed for Glamorgan, Ajaz was a veteran of 7 International T20 matches as well as 12 Test matches, including the Second Test at Mumbai where he became only the third bowler in cricket history, after Jim Laker and Anil Kumble, to take all ten wickets in an innings when he returned figures of 10/119 against India. His efforts though did not lead to a Kiwi victory as New Zealand were subsequently dismissed for 62 and lost by 372 runs.
Nvertheless, in 2024/25, Ajaz took a remarkable 5/103 and 6/57 in the Third Test of New Zealand’s short series against India as his team won at the Wankhede Stadium to complete an unprecedented 3-0 cleansweep on Indian soil. Ajaz was also adjudged Player of the Match after his eleven wicket haul, and all in city of his birth. This outstanding performance also meant that all 85 of his Test Match wickets have been claimed in away matches and he is yet to claim a wicket in Tests on New Zealand soil.
Ajaz played twice for Yorkshire during September 2019 – against Kent and Warwickshire – whilst he has also played in club cricket in Surrey.
