1902 saw the inaugural visit to Cardiff by an Australian touring team. It followed the MCC agreeing to a request from Jack Brain for a match in the Welsh capital against a combined Glamorgan and Wiltshire XI. The two-day contest duly attracted a massive crowd, with around 12,000 people in attendance, with trains packed with excited cricket supporters travelling to Cardiff from as far away as Milford Haven in the west and Swindon in the east.

The combined side made 121, with Sam Brain posting a dogged 32* before William Overton, the Wiltshire slow bowler, and Glamorgan’s Harry Creber got amongst the wickets with the Swansea spinner dismissing the first three Australian batters. Ernie Jones and Bert Hopkins staged a late fightback to guide the Australians to a 27-run lead on first innings before Herbie Morgan made a fine fifty. Walter Medlicott, Wiltshire’s Oxford Blue also made an unbeaten half-century as the combined side set the tourists a target of 155. Second time around however, the Australians found runs easier to come by as they eased to a six-wicket victory.
The match produced gate receipts in excess of £1,300 as Glamorgan enjoyed their most lucrative season to date. But on the field, the Welsh county rose just one place to finish fourth. Glamorgan did the double once again over Devon at the Arms Park and Exeter, but only three other victories were recorded including a thrilling one-wicket win over Monmouthshire at Swansea.
