Despite concerns over their finances, Glamorgan enjoyed an outstanding season in 1900 and shared top spot in the Minor County Championship table, with Durham and Northamptonshire.
Surrey 2nd XI were defeated both at home and away, with Jack Brain leading by example with a century at the Arms Park, plus an imperious 88 at The Oval. Billy Bancroft also chipped in with two half centuries, whilst Harry Creber ended the season with 60 wickets.
New signing Jack Nash showed great promise as an off-spinner, but it was the all-round form of William Russell which was the cornerstone of Glamorgan’ being able to enjoy their most successful season to date. The professional with Cowbridge CC scored 283 runs including 93 against Monmouthshire, besides taking 42 wickets at just 10 runs apiece. Russell’s haul included 10/57 as Wiltshire were defeated by eight wickets, 9/86 in the innings victory over Surrey and 9/68 as Berkshire were beaten at Reading by seven wickets.
