1898 saw Glamorgan win four of their ten Minor County fixtures as well as defeating the MCC by four wickets at Swansea. The victory at St. Helen’s stemmed from a fine bowling performance by Richard Lowe, who claimed fourteen wickets.
The season also saw the debut for Glamorgan of Harry Creber, a spinner whose feats were to subsequently see the Welsh county onto first-class status. His acquisition complemented the efforts of the Lowe brothers, plus William Russell, as Glamorgan were able to take to the field with a decent and well-balanced bowling attack.
On the batting front, Jack Brain was still to the fore with some high-class innings, whilst Ernie Jones, a stalwart from the Club’s early years, also made 101 against Cornwall at Swansea as the Welsh county showed that they could be a real force in the Minor County competition.
