Glamorgan drew six of their seven games in 1895 with their sole victory coming in the opening match of the summer as the Club met an eleven raised by the stalwart members of the South Wales CC. The match at Swansea was a clear sign to all and sundry that the days of the old gentlemen’s club had come to an end and after a fine 156 by Bertie Letcher, Glamorgan eased to a nine-wicket victory.

There was no fixture at Lord’s with the MCC with the gap in the fixture list being filled instead by a contest at the Arms Park against an All-England XI raised by Llandaff-born Vernon Hill, who was playing for Somerset and had been up at Oxford with Jack Brain.

Jack’s thoughts were already turning towards an application to the MCC for Glamorgan to join the Minor County Championship so having a showcase fixture would hopefully boost the Club’s coffers. Hill’s team included several of his Somerset colleagues plus the legendary CB Fry with the Sussex amateur top-scoring with an elegant 71.
