Jack Brain, the former Gloucestershire batsman and member of the Cardiff brewing dynasty was appointed as Glamorgan’s captain in 1891. After the various issues in 1890, he brought a greater element of professionalism to the affairs of the club, as reflected by the fixture list. Gone was the London tour, with August seeing home and away fixtures against Devon.

He was also eager to blood more young amateurs and, with this in mind, there was also a trial match over the Whitsun Bank Holiday against a Colts team. Jack was also instrumental in the creation of a new image for the Club. In their previous games, the Glamorgan players had sported white caps with a red dragon motif, but through his influence this was changed to green caps with a red dragon, plus sweaters with green and red bands.
In a bid to boost the Club’s finances, Jack used his contacts with Gloucestershire to arrange games at Bristol and the Arms Park against the West Country side, with the latter giving home supporters a chance to watch WG Grace in action against the local stars. With more cash available, Glamorgan were able to hire several new professionals including Tom Burton who was attached to the Bridgend club. His waspish bowling made him a handful for the MCC batsmen at Lord’s and with Welsh rugby international Billy Bancroft also making a half-century, Glamorgan recorded their first-ever victory on the hallowed turf at the famous ground in St. John’s Wood.
