8 August v Llwynypia CC at Llwynypia – Lost by 8 wickets.
Within a few weeks of the meeting at The Angel Hotel at which Glamorgan CCC was founded, a series of trials were staged on the Arms Park, whilst William Morgan, an influential member of the former South Wales CC and a man whose family had led the wave of industrialization in the Rhondda Valley, organized a practice match in August 1888 for a Glamorgan XI, captained by Morgan, against his cricket club in Llwynypia.

It ended in defeat though, with some of the Llwynypia members turning out for the county side when some of the chosen amateurs failed to appear. Letters were also sent to the officials of a number of English counties, including Herefordshire, Somerset, Worcestershire and Staffordshire, for fixtures in 1889. All said no, but replies in the affirmative came from the MCC, Surrey Club and Ground, and also Warwickshire – although only after the Birmingham-based club had received a guarantee of £40, paid for by JP Jones and JTD Llewelyn – the Club’s Chair and Treasurer – out of their own pockets.
