William Whittington

William Whittington was the eldest son of Matthew Whittington, a wealthy farmer and landowner who lived at Tonna House to the north-west of the town of Neath. Having trained as a civil engineer, William became the Borough Surveyor and Inspector of Nuisances for Neath Rural District Council.

As far as his cricketing career was concerned, William’s first match of note came on his home ground at Neath in 1867 when he played for the Gentlemen of South Wales against the Players of South Wales. The following year he was in action again at The Gnoll as he played for the XXII of Cadoxton and South Wales against the United South of England. Later in 1868 William also played for the West Glamorgan side which met East Glamorgan at Merthyr Mawr.

William made several appearances for Glamorganshire in 1869, starting with Breconshire at Brecon, followed by the game with Radnorshire at Llandrindod Wells. Later that year he also played against Monmouthshire at Usk as well as the return game with Radnorshire at Neath.
