Henry Ivins was a stalwart of Newport CC having been one of the founding members of Newport Athletic Club in 1875.

A left-handed batter and occasional seam bowler, Henry appeared for the South Wales Cricket Club on their London tours in 1876, 1877 and 1878. Henry was a top-order batter and made his maiden half-century for the South Wales team at Hove in 1876 when he scored 57 batting at number three against the Gentlemen of Sussex. He also made 60 batting at number three against Clifton CC in their match at the Rodney Parade ground in Newport 1879.

His final appearance for the South Wales Club came against the MCC at Cardiff Arms Park in 1880. The following year, Henry also opened the batting for the Newport and District XXII against the United England Eleven at Rodney Parade, scoring 11 and 13. In 1882 he acted as a guest for Chepstow CC in their match against the United England Eleven in 1882.

Henry was also a regular in the Monmouthshire team between 1882 and 1887, and in the latter season made 88 against Breconshire on his ‘home’ turf at Rodney Parade.

Born in Gloucestershire during 1846, Henry was a Customs Officer at Newport Docks and rose to the position of Manager of Newport Customs House. He lived at Belmont, a substantial property on Chepstow Road with his wife, six sons and three daughters.
