Born in Cardiff in 1847 and educated at Cheltenham College, he lived at Ely Court and owned several collieries in the Taff Valley, besides overseeing the export of coal from his mines via the docks in Cardiff and Barry, as well as serving as a Director of the Taff Vale Railway.

Fred was the archetypal country gentleman enjoying a range of rural sports including hunting and shooting. His family had also been instrumental in the creation of Fairwater Cricket Club who played in the grounds of the family’s house off Fairwater Road as well as on land which now forms the site of Cantonian High School. During the winter months, he also organised a number of hunting parties for his sporting friends at Insole Court.
