Ben Kellaway, a middle-order batter and ambidextrous spin bowler, is one of the rising stars of Welsh Cricket.

He first played for Glamorgan in 2022 in their three-day friendly at Sophia Gardens against Cardiff UCCE – a match which was not classed as being first-class. Educated at Chepstow Comprehensive School and Clifton College, Ben initially played club cricket for Chepstow CC and appeared in Wales age-group teams. He duly made his debut as a schoolboy for Wales Minor Counties in 2019 and for the Glamorgan 2nd XI in 2021.

After some promising performances in the 2nd XI during 2023, Ben made his 1st XI debut in the opening T20 match of the season against Gloucestershire at Bristol prior to making his bow in List A cricket in the opening game of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup against Worcestershire at New Road.

Ben also dabbled with bowling left-arm spin in some 2nd XI matches during 2024 having spent the COVID lockdown learning how to bowl with his other arm. In the NCCA showcase match against Wiltshire at Swindon he alternated between bowling off-breaks and slow left-arm during several overs, besides at 20 years and 198 days old, captaining the youthful Glamorgan side in the friendly at Swindon.

In the subsequent match with Surrey at The Oval, he removed Connor McKerr with a slow left-arm delivery before switching back to off-breaks and trapping Matt Dunn l.b.w., and in the process became the first bowler since Charlie Rowe to take a wicket with each arm in a county game with the former Kent spinner having achieved the curious feat against Sussex in a Championship contest at Hove in 1980.

2024 saw Ben complete his maiden five-wicket haul in the County Championship match against Sussex at Hove, and he was a member of the Welsh county’s side which defeated Somerset by 25 runs in the Final of the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

2025 was a massive year for Ben as, firstly, he completed his degree studies in Biomedical Sciences at Cardiff University, before claiming 5/101 against Derbyshire at Sophia Gardens, in addition to scoring his maiden County Championship hundred in early May, with a hugely impressive 181* against Kent at Canterbury, and all whilst preparing for his Finals. At the end of June, having sat his Finals, Ben then achieved the rare feat of scoring a century a century and taking a five-wicket haul as Glamorgan came close to defeating Gloucestershire at Cardiff, with the 21 year-old scoring 139 before completing career-best bowling figures of 6/111.

15 July 2025 was a very special day for Ben, and his family, firstly with confirmation in the morning that he had been signed as a wildcard by the Welsh Fire for the Hundred, before during the afternoon attending his graduation ceremony in central Cardiff, and then in the early evening heading up to Loughborough University to attend a spin bowling camp, organised by the ECB, where he was coached by Andrew Flintoff, Kumar Sangakkara and Graeme Swann.

2025 also saw Ben being included as a wildcard in the Welsh Fire’s squad, with the youngster making a sensational debut in The Hundred against the Birmingham Phoenix at Edgbaston with Ben becoming the Meerkat Match Hero after claiming a couple of wickets, completing three catches plus a diving run out, as well as making a superb effort for a catch as the Fire completed an eight-wicket victory.

At the end of the 2025 season, Ben was chosen, alongside Asa Tribe, in the England Lions party for the tour to Australia as the cream of rising talent in the county game shadowed the national team in the Ashes series against Australia. He duly made his debut for the England Lions in their four-day game (not f-c) against a Cricket Australia XIV at Lilac Hill in Perth and scored 59 in England’s second innings.

After the end of the Lions tour, Ben travelled to Dubai after being summoned as injury cover by the Gulf Giants in the ILT20 competition. He made one appearance, on 28 December, batting at number three and scoring 5 runs in his sole innings in the 20 overs competition.
